Nanga Parbat, meaning “Naked Mountain” in Sanskrit, derives its name from the strikingly steep slopes that are devoid of vegetation and snow. Local legend also refers to the mountain as Diamir, meaning "Abode of Fairies." According to this legend, the Queen of the Fairies resides on the mountain in a majestic castle made entirely of crystal-clear ice, guarded by enormous snow serpents and frogs. Early disasters during attempts to summit Nanga Parbat were often attributed to the wrath of these fairies.

Nanga Parbat is not a single peak but a 20-kilometer-long chain of towering ridges and peaks, culminating in an icy crest that reaches 8,125 meters. Its South Face, known as the Rupal Face, rises 5,000 meters, while the North Face, or Raikot Face, plunges 7,000 meters from the summit into the depths of one of the world’s most dramatic gorges, the Indus Gorge. This expedition focuses on the southern side, home to the formidable Rupal Face.

Nanga Parbat is Pakistan's second-highest mountain and the ninth-highest in the world. It is not part of the Karakoram range but rather marks the westernmost extremity of the mighty Himalayas, separated from the Karakoram by the Indus River.
